▶ CHARACTER
NAME: Levi Ackerman
CANON: Attack on Titan
CANON POINT: Post-Chapter 84ish / Post-Season 3
AGE: Mid-30s
BACKGROUND: Levi Wikia
PERSONALITY: The thing about Levi is. In a way, he is truly humanity's hero; one of the fiercest soldiers in history, with a shadow so much larger than the man responsible. He's idolized for that very shadow of greatness he casts. Levi is a symbol of hope and perseverance in the face of fragility— something Humanity desperately needs. Levi is imagined to be this great, romanticized man fighting alongside the even greater and more romanticized Commander Erwin, whose sharp intellect and clever, absurd new ideas have revolutionized their war against titans in their small pocket of surviving humans.
And then you get Levi one on one and he's making poop jokes delivered with such a deadpan you can't quite tell if you should laugh or not. He's difficult to read with a constant scowl, which packs a punch considering he's only 5'2". Levi is not the hero he's painted to be, but his status as a soldier is not to be compromised for his lack of decorum. He strongly values respect and intentions. Honor. Honesty. He is by no means a well-mannered individual, and even less so is he a man that's proud of humanity or loyal to the nobles or the King.
Levi's loyalty is to one man alone and what he stands for; Erwin Smith, the Commander of the Survey Corps. Despite Levi's demeanor and his crass mouth, it may surprise others how strictly he follows orders and how (seemingly) blindly he'll execute them. He doesn't have to know a single detail about a death trap he knowingly marches into at a gallop; he trusts Erwin to know what he's doing when giving orders and has Erwin's trust to do his damnedest in whatever situation he may be dropped into by following those orders, no matter how rocky a start they had.
Levi's goals and motivations once started as simply "escaping the slums" his prostitute mother died in, after which he'd been taken under the wing of her killer brother and taught how to fight before being abandoned and rolling into a gang. He grew close to two others in particular and, upon hearing of the sort of skill being exercised down in the slums, Erwin arranged a ruse to bring them to the surface and complete a "mission" for him— one that ends in the death of Levi's only friends, but gives him insight to Erwin as a person. The cunning mind behind it all and realizing exactly what he meant for humanity's future, a man who told him to go forward and live for his lost comrades. Who gave him purpose.
From that point on, rather than killing Erwin as he'd initially wished for those deaths, Levi placed his trust in him. It grew as Erwin did right by him, raising Levi through military ranks until he was one of Erwin's second-in-commands. It was better than what he'd had down in the slums, and there was no returning to that life for Levi once he'd stood under the sun and the rain.
Still, despite his unwavering faith and loyalty, Levi realizes when Erwin has gone too far and has no qualms in telling him, openly bumping heads with him and sparing no formalities when need be. He listens, but he doesn't act on hard-to-swallow orders without showing his displeasure. He still acts, but this has lead to Levi's life being prioritized far beyond his own liking. Levi had had to follow such orders and come upon his squad's broken corpses, realizing what Erwin's orders for him to regroup had been for— he had seen so far ahead that he knew he had to delay Levi's pursuit. And he'd had to keep going without a second to spare for grief or mourning, to save the main character. Humanity's hope. No, he hadn't been pleased with those orders and anger was sure to follow, but he'd still chosen to obey and saw the wisdom in the outcome.
It's clear in a number of ways that Levi isn't the most sociable of individuals, both on his blunt and difficult to parse manner and how quickly he'll drop into past behaviors without batting a lash— beating up teenagers on the stand, engaging in outright torture, killing other humans when it comes down to it— he's blunt and crude, and he'll do whatever is needed of him. He knows he has A Particular Set Of Skills.
Though, he does care about those around him, even if he's bad at showing it. It's later remarked on by the Reeves Company's boss, telling his son that a good eye is crucial for a businessman and that Levi is clumsy but soft-hearted, and Levi goes above and beyond to try and save those around him. His squad has always adored, admired, and made fun of Levi in equal parts, understanding him at least partially and seeing the man beneath the cloak. While he starts out scary, it's really enforced that it's really down to his clumsiness in expressing himself and how soft-hearted he truly is. His way of going about things is crude, but it always ends in understanding. So long as he's communicated the issue, it's all right.
He doesn't like killing, horrified when it's revealed that titans were once humans and not just mindless monsters. He struggles to save a dying Erwin and fights back the other soldiers who try to wrench a serum from him, but he ultimately gives into Erwin's unconscious act of batting the syringe away and allows him his peace of passing. He was an important part of Levi's life and he had to let him go, too, as he had so many others. Nothing could have changed his mind if not for Erwin himself.
All in all, Levi is a sarcastic, blunt, and slightly socially-inept dude that's pretty damn good at fightin titans and he can hook you up with a hot titan date if you laugh at his poop jokes.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Levi is a regular human, though he's been sharpened into a lean, mean, titan-slaying machine long before he was even part of the military force. He's currently a member (captain of a special unit containing the most skilled members) of the Survey Corps who actually venture outside the walls to reinforce travel paths and take on stray titans, and before Wall Maria fell, they scouted outside of humanity's stronghold entirely to try and trace back the titans' origins or discover any additional information about them. The Military Police largely stay within Wall Sina and protect the nobles and general order, while the Garrison Regiment mans and maintains the walls and general populace. They'd never venture outside of the walls before Wall Maria fell, and still hardly do to this day. There are special occasions, of course, and in recent chapters emergency measures were taken where the Survey Corps took along some of the MPs and GRs, but that was about the extent of that.
His Omni-Directional Maneuver (ODM) Gear gives him an upper hand on most combat situations by allowing him exceptional movement and additional speed. It's a gas-powered propulsion/grappler hook system attached to soldiers via full body harnesses and utilized with gun-like handles that they use in conjunction with detachable flexible steel blades. He has developed his own efficient way of fighting with them and is considered Humanity's Strongest, but it's not due to superhuman strength or any powers.
INVENTORY:
- Survey Corps uniform (do not take away the cravat he will wither and die)
- ODM Gear, complete with 12 blades (highly flexible and sharp, dull quickly)
- A couple concealed knives
- A small notebook and pen, akin to a moleskine
- His biting wit
- An arsenal of poop jokes
MOONBLESSING: Sanguis

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Levi is not forthcoming in his emotions. His feelings. Hell, even his thoughts. He's a small man packed solid with it all, encased in muscle and always ready to act. He takes his losses with hollow eyes and silence, has no words for the spirits clawing at his back, and responds to most everything with a quiet disdain.
It's much easier to be an unfeeling weapon in trusted hands. Would that he were cold steel, easily discarded when it's grown dull and snapped from the hilt in Erwin's hands knowing he's done his duty. Instead the man inspires loyalty in him and kindles anger that Levi couldn't be at his side when he'd needed him, leaves him upset with himself for not being able to heal quicker. That one stupid mistake by some kids left him unable to give chase, and that led to Erwin returning without an arm, no longer whole. And while Levi sits at his bedside and does everything expected of him to do, he makes off-beat jokes without the sincerity usually tucked between callous words and doesn't have the heart (hah) to say what's really on his mind. Not while the man's still recovering. He won't heap his own grief on top of Erwin's when they both know what the injury likely means for him.
Having to see the man he's given countless lives to, including his own, broken and on the edge of losing it? Levi almost can't handle it.
But that, too, is only a brief stage. Soon they're both back in their gear, and Erwin's returned to grand speeches and grander schemes, working on the desperately needed reform humanity deserves.
Levi doesn't have an eye for these things. For the most part, he doesn't particularly care. He does as his commander commands. He doesn't hold a fraction of the hope in others that Erwin does, in the end. And eventually, that weighs on him, as well. And that fact he tucks away deep, hidden in dusty-dark corners with his disdain for himself, feeling it ache every time he sees that empty sleeve.
Tonight it's late, and the candles that light Erwin's desk where he'd been penning up more letters to some official or another, petitioning their support, have burned low enough to deem replacement. But the attendee has his healed leg draped over the arm of his chair, arm along the commander's desk where his head rests, eyes closed yet not asleep. Just dozing away in the silence until touch flattens one of his fingers, requesting his attention.
Levi unfurls as he raises his head just a few inches from his arm, hair mussed and head tipping in silent question. Low light or no, grey eyes cut right through the dim blanket over the office and find Erwin's with a certainty that spoke to repetition. He's always aware of just where his gaze falls and where to find it, just like he's always aware of exactly where Erwin is, battlefield or no.
Only that was some time ago, now, wasn't it? This is just some simulation in this place, some brain-reader that shows him what he wants to see projected into the room he's given. And here he is, lost and weak, just thinking of how easily he used to nod off at Erwin's side, in a room they'd shared out of necessity for Erwin's new disability and Levi's lack of sleep, meaning he never needed a proper bed. The one in the room was enough for Erwin, and this chair was always enough for Levi for what few hours he got.
